Before he knows it, traveling has become part of Yasu’s daily life, and he has created pinhole photos while traveling. His trips always start in lucky direction according to an astrological sign, and, once a trip starts, the trip becomes a journey to look for his true self through various connections. The “Wind Mandala” series taken with pinhole cameras (8×10 inch film) is not just a collection of landscape photos, as he didn’t “take” them, rather they happened to be taken through encounters with people and scenery. These were photos created during a trip that allowed him to live with the people and scenery he encountered during the journey. Yasu Suzuka’s works are essentially different from those with particular subjects found and taken by photographers. They are the absolute outcome of his own lifestyle.
